Game Description:

Kiddo Sum Path is a simple 1st grade game that gives kids an engaging way to practice basic addition on repeat. Instead of a kid answering a question that pops up on screen, they are supposed to string a pathway of numbers, selecting combinations that add up to the target sum displayed.

Simple Puzzle Based Addition

In general, Kiddo Sum Path is a puzzle based grade 1 game for kids who are starting to get comfortable with addition. It keeps the numbers simple albeit it adds a little path puzzle to the mix.

For math lessons and fun learning, this combination works pretty well, especially when a child needs a short break from regular schoolwork.

The beauty is that they can start with the simple puzzles as they go from the basic levels to the harder ones.

The game adopts a nice cartoon science theme scene designed to keep young learners engaged while they practice maths. In fact, the whole gaming environment is meant to feel simple, visual, playful and engaging!

How to Play

• The child can start the game and they get 60 seconds to complete the level. At the top of the screen, they can see the timer, the current level, the current sum and the target sum.
• The game board in the middle has different boxes showing numbers such as +0 and +1. The character starts on the green START box.
• The child then has to look at the target sum and work out which boxes they need to move through to reach it.
• For example, if the current sum is 0 and the target sum is 1, the child needs to find a path that includes a +1. The +0 boxes don’t change the sum, while a +1 adds one to it. As the child picks the boxes, a green line appears behind the character and shows the path they have taken.
• The goal is to reach the target while making your way across the board. There is also an EXIT box at the end of the path. The child has to think about which boxes to choose rather than simply clicking everything they see.

There are 10 levels in the game. Level 1 is the best place to start with albeit there is a Levels button that lets the child see the other stages. There is also a Help button if they get stuck. The sound, music and information buttons are at the top right of the screen, so the child can also control the game audio to their liking.

Educational Benefits

• This game gives kids repeated practice with basic addition problems but it does this in a way that feels more like a puzzle than a normal math lesson.
• The game develops thinking ability and basic problem-solving skills. They have to look at the current sum, check the target and decide which path makes sense.
• The 60-second timer also means the child cannot spend forever deciding what to do. They have to pay attention and make their choices while the clock is running. It thus keeps kids focused during short periods of classroom learning or at home.
• For parents following a homeschool curriculum, Kiddo Sum Path can also work as a quick activity alongside regular addition lessons. It won’t replace proper teaching, of course, but it can be a nice way to give kids some extra practice without handing them another worksheet.
